The LH Surge
Mid-cycle, the brain releases a sharp spike in Luteinizing Hormone (LH). This hormonal trigger tells the dominant follicle in the ovary to rupture and release the egg. Ovulation typically happens 24 to 36 hours after this surge begins.
At-home Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs) detect this LH surge in your urine. A positive test means ovulation is imminent, not that it is happening right now.
